When you register a domain name, your details are stored in a database anyone can access. It's called the whois database and it contains lots of information about you. It could include your name and address, email - or even your phone number.

When you purchase domain privacy, we use a privacy service to replace your information with some generic details. All your personal information is completely hidden and no-one can find it in the whois database.

And so you don't miss legitimate enquiries (like if someone wants to buy your domain), the email address in the database will forward messages to you, minus the spam.

Protecting a .uk domain?

If it's a .uk domain you want to protect, you can use the .uk whois opt-out option. Just choose this when you buy your domain, or log in to your control panel and select it afterwards. Best of all? The .uk opt-out is totally free of charge.

Please note: domain privacy is sold on an annual basis. The service is not transferable between domains, and you may not claim refunds if you allow a domain to expire.
